Under 150 people Claude Team usually costs less, and Enterprise adds the IT and compliance controls

Both plans give everyone Claude on web, desktop and mobile, plus Claude Code and Cowork. What changes is how usage is paid for, and what your IT and compliance people can control.

Move from Claude Team to Enterprise when you pass 150 people or need controls Team lacks

  • You have more than 150 people

Claude Team stops at 150 seats. Above that, Enterprise is the Claude plan for the whole company.

  • IT wants SCIM and audit logs

SCIM adds and removes people from your identity provider automatically. Audit logs record user actions, system events and data access.

  • You process patient health information in the US

Only Enterprise can switch on a HIPAA-ready configuration and accept a BAA.

  • Your policy sets how long data is kept

Enterprise has custom retention controls, and a Compliance API that exports activity logs, chats and files.

Hitting Team’s usage limits is not by itself a reason to move. Give those people Team Premium seats first: at US$100 a month paid yearly, a Premium seat costs less than an Enterprise seat plus our lightest code-work usage figure (US$120).

Some organisations need Claude Enterprise whatever it costs

Enterprise is the only option

US healthcare organisations that process patient health information. Anthropic offers a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for HIPAA only on Enterprise, for hospitals, clinics, health plans, insurers, healthcare data processors and their business associates.

The BAA does not cover every feature. Cowork isn’t covered, and Claude Code is covered only with zero data retention, until your Primary Owner applies Anthropic’s HIPAA configuration to both; that is currently only for organisations with an Anthropic account team.

Organisations with more than 150 people. Claude Team stops at 150 seats.

Often required by IT or compliance

Financial services, legal and the public sector. Record-keeping, investigation and legal-hold or retention policies in these organisations often call for audit logs, the Compliance API and custom data retention, and only Enterprise has them.

Companies whose IT requires SCIM. Team has single sign-on and just-in-time provisioning, but automatic provisioning from an identity provider such as Okta or Microsoft Entra ID is Enterprise only.

Ask your compliance team which of these your own policies need.

Set spend limits for the organisation, each group and each person before anyone starts

  • The whole organisation

A ceiling on everyone’s usage. When it’s reached, usage stops until the next billing period or until an owner raises it.

  • A group

Give engineering a bigger budget than everyone else. Group limits are Enterprise only.

  • Each person

Nobody can go past their own limit or the organisation’s, whichever is lower.

  • The credit pool, if you buy online

Everyone draws on the same credits. When the balance hits zero, usage stops for the whole organisation.

Monthly limits we would start with for the team in your calculator

GroupExpected usage a personLimit for each personLimit for the group
People doing code work (10)US$200US$400US$2,500
People doing non-coding work (40)US$20US$40US$1,000
Whole organisationUS$3,500

Our suggestion, not Anthropic’s, in US dollars because that is how Anthropic bills. Each person gets twice their expected usage, so one busy week doesn’t lock them out; each group gets a quarter more than its expected total, which still stops a runaway month. Change the calculator and the table follows.

Moving from Claude Team to Enterprise online is one upgrade, and it can’t be undone

  1. Upgrade your existing Team organisation instead of starting a new one. At claude.ai/upgrade choose Get Enterprise plan, then the option to upgrade an existing organisation. Chat history, projects and shared content, memberships and roles all carry over; a new organisation starts from scratch.
  2. Raise any Team spend limit before go-live. Once the organisation limit is reached, everyone loses access at once until it’s raised or the new month begins.
  3. Choose seats (at least 20), a limit for each person and a starting usage balance. The upgrade is paid by card; you can switch to bank transfer afterwards.
  4. Buying through sales? Agree a go-live time with your account executive. Nobody can use Claude while the organisation is provisioned, so plan the rollout for the next business morning and ask everyone to log out and back in afterwards.
  5. Switch features back on. Skills, code execution and file creation, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and Claude in Chrome start switched off on Enterprise. Nothing is deleted: switching them on restores what people made.
  6. Check seats and credits. Some people may show as No seat assigned and can’t use Claude until an admin fixes it, so check your heaviest users first. Unused Team usage credits roll over; monthly API credits stop, though any you have stay usable until they expire.

Six things that catch teams out after they switch to Claude Enterprise

  • The seat includes no usage

On Team, a US$20 Standard seat covers everyday use up to its limit. On Enterprise the same US$20 buys access only, and every token is billed on top.

  • One credit pool for everyone

Bought online, everyone draws on the same prepaid balance. When it hits zero, nobody can work.

  • The 20-seat minimum

A team of 12 pays for 20 seats, and on a plan bought online you can’t remove seats mid-term.

  • US-only processing costs 10% more

Usage on Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 and later models is billed at 1.1 times API rates, however you buy.

  • Older Enterprise plans are moving

Seat-based Standard and Premium plans, and Chat and Chat + Claude Code seats, switch to the usage-based seat at the next renewal.

  • Features start switched off

Skills, code execution and Claude in Chrome are off after the move until an admin switches them on.

Our code-work figures come from Anthropic’s Claude Code costs, and the non-coding ones are our estimate

LevelCode work, a person a monthNon-coding work, a person a month
LightUS$100: about 8 days at Anthropic’s average of US$13 an active dayUS$5
RegularUS$200: inside Anthropic’s US$150 to US$250 a developer a monthUS$20
HeavyUS$600: US$30 on each of 20 working days (90% of developers stay under US$30 a day)US$60

The non-coding figures are our estimate, not Anthropic’s. If you are on Team with usage credits switched on, Organisation settings > Usage shows each person’s spend this month: put your real numbers in under Use my own figures. US-only inference adds 10% to every figure.

What teams ask before buying Claude Enterprise

Does the Claude Enterprise seat include any usage?

No. The US$20 seat gives each person Claude on web, desktop and mobile, plus Claude Code and Cowork, but no usage at all. Every token anyone uses, in chat, Claude Code or Cowork, is billed on top at Anthropic’s standard API rates. There are no per-seat usage limits either, so the only things that stop someone working are a spend limit you set or, on a plan bought online, an empty credit balance.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): What is the Enterprise plan?; How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?.

Is Claude Team or Claude Enterprise cheaper for my company?

Claude Team, for nearly every team under 150 people. An Enterprise seat costs the same US$20 a month as a Team Standard seat paid yearly, and on Enterprise all usage comes on top, while Team includes usage up to each seat’s weekly limit. For a team of 50, with 10 people doing code work and everyone at Regular use, the calculator puts Team at US$1,800 a month and Enterprise at about US$3,800. Team’s catch is the limit: anyone who goes past it waits for the reset or uses usage credits at API rates. Choose Enterprise when you need its controls or have more than 150 people; it won’t save you money.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): What is the Team plan?; What is the Enterprise plan?.

What is the minimum number of seats for Claude Enterprise?

Twenty seats if you buy online (self-serve), and 50 if you buy through Anthropic’s sales team. With fewer than 20 people you still pay for 20 seats, which is US$400 a month or US$4,800 a year before anyone uses Claude. Seats are charged for the year at the start of your billing cycle, seats added later are charged pro rata straight away, and on a plan bought online you can’t remove seats mid-term.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): What is the Enterprise plan?; How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?.

Can we pay monthly for Claude Enterprise?

For seats, no: Enterprise is billed yearly only, upfront. Usage depends on how you buy. Bought online, you pay for usage in advance as credits, which draw down as your team works. Bought through sales, usage is invoiced monthly in arrears for what people actually used. If you want to pay month by month for everything, that is Claude Team, at US$25 a Standard seat and US$125 a Premium seat a month.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): Claude pricing; How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?.

Can we pay for Claude Enterprise in pounds or euros?

Not online. Self-serve Enterprise is billed in US dollars only, by credit card, debit card or ACH bank transfer. Through Anthropic’s sales team you can pay in other currencies and by invoice; invoices of US$50,000 or more can only be paid by bank transfer. This calculator converts Enterprise into pounds or euros at the European Central Bank reference rate so you can compare it with Claude Team, which Anthropic prices locally (its UK prices include 20% VAT).

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): What is the Enterprise plan?; How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?.

How do we stop one person running up the Claude Enterprise bill?

Set spend limits in Organisation settings > Usage. Owners, Primary Owners and custom roles allowed to manage billing can set a monthly limit for the whole organisation, for each group and for each person, and nobody can go past their own limit or the organisation’s, whichever is lower. The same page shows who is blocked by a limit right now, who is close to one and how many member-days were lost this month, so you can raise limits for the people who need more.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?; Migrate your organization from Team to Enterprise.

What happens when our Claude Enterprise credits run out?

On a plan bought online, usage stops for the whole organisation until an Owner, Primary Owner or someone with billing permission buys more credits in Organisation settings > Usage. Auto-reload keeps the balance topped up, but only when you pay by card: it isn’t available with ACH, and credits bought by ACH arrive only when the payment settles. Plans bought through sales have no balance to run out. Usage is invoiced monthly, and only a spend limit stops it.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?; What is the Enterprise plan?.

Do we keep our chats and projects when we move from Claude Team to Enterprise?

Yes, as long as you upgrade your existing Team organisation instead of creating a new one. Chat history, projects and shared content, and people’s memberships and roles all carry over. Some capabilities are switched off by default on Enterprise: skills, code execution and file creation, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, and Claude in Chrome. Nothing people made with them is deleted, and it comes back when an admin switches them on. A brand-new Enterprise organisation starts from scratch.

Source (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): Migrate your organization from Team to Enterprise.

Can we go back to Claude Team after upgrading to Enterprise?

Not if you upgrade online. Anthropic says moving a Team organisation to self-serve Enterprise through the upgrade page can’t be reversed, so run your numbers through the calculator and check the comparison table before you confirm. On a plan bought through sales, cancellation goes through your Anthropic contact or the sales team.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): Migrate your organization from Team to Enterprise; Claude pricing.

Does Claude Team have single sign-on?

Yes. Claude Team includes single sign-on (SSO) with domain capture, just-in-time provisioning and role-based permissions. Enterprise adds SCIM, which creates and removes accounts from your identity provider automatically, plus audit logs, custom data retention and the Compliance API. Allow 24 to 48 hours for the DNS change that verifies your domain, though many take effect within 10 minutes, and expect existing users to be logged out once SSO is switched on.

Can we sign a BAA for HIPAA on Claude Team?

No. Team plans, and Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, can’t enable HIPAA. Any Enterprise organisation, bought online or through sales, can switch on a HIPAA-ready configuration, and only its Primary Owner can accept the Business Associate Agreement (BAA). In the self-serve flow the BAA is a standard click-to-accept agreement that can’t be modified. Switching HIPAA on resets some settings and can’t be undone from organisation settings. An API BAA signed before 2 December 2025 doesn’t cover the Enterprise plan, so you would need a new one.

Source (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): HIPAA-ready Enterprise plans.

What does the Claude Enterprise BAA cover?

Not every feature. Each one is either covered by the BAA, available but not covered, or switched off, and protected health information should only go through covered features; the Implementation Guide for HIPAA Entities on Anthropic’s Trust Center lists them. Switching on HIPAA doesn’t bring Claude Code or Cowork under the BAA by itself. Until the Primary Owner applies the HIPAA configuration to both (currently only for organisations with an Anthropic account team), Cowork isn’t covered and Claude Code is covered only with zero data retention, which only qualified accounts can get. Once that configuration is on, cloud features such as Claude Code cloud sessions and Cowork in the cloud are unavailable.

Source (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): HIPAA-ready Enterprise plans.

Can we keep Claude’s processing in the EU?

Not on Claude Team or Enterprise today. The choices are global processing, the default, or US-only inference on Enterprise. On Anthropic’s own API the inference location setting takes the same two values, global or US, and US is the only place data is stored at rest. Amazon Bedrock and Google-managed Claude models on Google Cloud set the region by the endpoint you call, but that is API access for building your own tools, not the Claude Team or Enterprise apps.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): Data residency; What is the Enterprise plan?.

What does US-only inference cost on Claude Enterprise?

It bills usage at 1.1 times standard API rates on Claude Opus 4.6, Sonnet 4.6 and later models, whether you bought online or through sales; on the API the multiplier applies to input and output tokens and to cache writes and reads. The seat price doesn’t change. For the calculator’s default team of 50, with US$2,800 of usage a month, it adds US$280 a month.

Sources (Anthropic, checked 31 October 2026): How am I billed for my Enterprise plan?; Data residency.

We’re on an older seat-based Claude Enterprise plan. What changes?

At your next contract renewal you move to the single usage-based Enterprise seat. That applies to the older Standard and Premium seats with usage limits, and to Chat and Chat + Claude Code seats; neither is sold on new contracts. Until renewal, your seat types, usage limits and usage credits stay as they are. Afterwards every token is billed at API rates with no per-seat limits, so set spend limits before the switch. To move earlier, ask your Anthropic contact or the sales team.

Does Anthropic give discounts on Claude Enterprise?

Possibly, through its sales team. Anthropic says the sales team offers tailored terms and “tiered incentives on usage commitments”, but it doesn’t publish what they are. If you have a quote, open "Use my own figures" in the calculator and enter your seat price to see what it does to the total.
